ELM
Located in the historic preservation district of oldtown Flagstaff, this home had suffered many remodels in its 110-year history. Upon removal of the siding, it was revealed that this was originally a stucco home built in the Mediterranean Revival style. The new owners expressed a desire to retain as many original design elements as possible while updating the home.
New windows were fitted into the existing openings, new stucco was added to the exterior and repainted, locally sourced Malpais stone was added around the foundation and the original arched car port was structurally improved. The interior was reworked in the kitchen and living areas. Several walls were removed to enlarge rooms and open the floorplan. Where walls were retained, new arched openings were added to mirror the original archways.
In the living and dining areas the fireplace was clad with bright clean granite, the original oak floors were refinished, and the original plaster walls were repaired. The kitchen was vastly enlarged and combined with a laundry room and mud room from the carport. Updates included new cabinets, countertops, tile flooring, tile backsplash, recessed lighting and appliances.
A primary suite was also created by adding a bathroom and combining two smaller rooms. New tile, fixtures, plumbing, cabinetry and an improved layout make these rooms contemporary and modern, while still very much in keeping with the original style of the home.
